Q: Are there any natural or human-grade brands of diabetic dog food?
I've researched most of the major brands of dry diabetic dog food (e.g. Hill's, Purina etc.), and the ones I've seen contain animal by-products. Does any one know of brands suitable for diabetic dogs that use human-grade ingredients? If not, are there any homemade dog food recipes that you would recommend?

A: Try evo or wellness core, both grain free and low carb.

Q: My dog was diagnosticated diabetic, can somebody please tell me a bout a really good diabetic food for dogs?
Royal canine has one but I read it has removed all the dry food for the recall, it is so consfusing, any body know anything?

A: You can buy diabetic dog food through your vet. I know they make a canned variety and imagine there is a dry type also. It will be pricey but it is important to get the proper food for your dog with a medical condition like diabetes.Good luck!

Q: Ideas For A Diabetic Food Product?
I need some ideas for an item of food that I could make for a diabetic (eg: apple crumble). It dosent have to be anything too complicated either and im not too bothered if it isnt very good for a diabetic- i just need the ideas! thanks Im more interested in ideas rather than if is diabetic, I was thinking of a pasta bake but it is carbohydrate- it needs to be something reasonably simple- or something I can make in 1 hour. Thanks

A: Those of us with diabetes can eat any food on this planet. We need to count carbohydrates , not sugar. Anything made with sugar free chemicals ending with "toil" will harm our digestive system. Just make any food and the person with diabetes will count their carbs. Loads of pasta can be difficult but a little is just fine.

Q: What's the best food for diabetic cats on insulin?
When my cat was first diagnosed he was put on special diabetic buiscit, now his new vet says he can eat normal cat food from a tin,and also fish,i'm confused.

A: I have a diabetic kitty, too, she is 14 yo and been diabetic for 5+ years. For years I feed her the Purina DM, the veterinary formula for diabetes, until I discovered it had corn in it. No wonder I couldn't keep her BG in check. The very basic idea with a diabetic kitty is to be tenaciously cautious to feed a good quality canned food that does not contain any kind of grain..corn, rice, wheat. Just take a little time to read the labels. The food with primariy fish is not good to feed more than several times a week because of the high level of phosphorus. If you haven't found it yet, please do some reading on the Feline Diabetes website. There is a wealth of information by other diabetic kitty caretakers. I have attached several links to the FD website, the Fancy Feast list, the food charts compiled by a member of the FD message board, and a general cat nutrition website. The cat nutrition site is written by a veterinarian and cat lover. The information is easy to read and understand, and explains what to look for with foods, brands and even raw meat diet. For me, I feed my all my cats the gluten free formulas of Fancy Feast and Innova EVO dry. Dry food in general is not the best choice for diabetic kitties, but mine likes dry food. EVO is the best formula I have found, she eats it and her BG stay in normal range. Do you hometest? I have a BG meter that I use several times a week and I also use the urine strips. There are videos on the FD site showing how to hometest using a BG meter. There are several of us here that have diabetic kitties. I hope they answer, too, and give you points I may have missed! Purrs to you and kitty.

Q: How many days can a diabetic go without food AND insulin?
-How many days can a diabetic person go without both food AND insulin before their blood sugar is profoundly affected to the point of coma and/or death? -Would hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia be more likely in this situation? Even though no insulin is taken, no food is ingested either, so would the blood sugar still rise dangerously high in 48-72 hours? Or would the last dose of basal insulin eventually cause a low?

A: The liver produces certain amounts of glucose naturally. In many type 2 diabetics the liver acts like a sugar factory on overtime. Whether the individual was type 1 or type 2 this would be dangerous. After a certain amount of time spent fasting the body starts to burn its own fat stores to provide energy which would also cause blood sugar to rise and cause DKA. You probably wouldn't see a low because the basal is taken to deal with the natural production of glucose by the liver throughout the day. Blood sugar would rise and that's never good.

Q: Does any one know where i can find a diabetic food chart??

Q: What food a Diabetic patient must eat?
For Break fast what Indian food is suggested? For Lunch what India food is suggested For dinner what Indian food is suggested? When should a Diabetic patient go to sleep? What exercise will be most suitable for a diabetic patient?

A: A diabetic diet should consist of a good combination of nutrients i.e. carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals to stay fit and fine and to keep the blood sugar levels in check. Fenugreek is the best for diabetic people. You can fry and powder it and dialy consume one spoon. Uou can mix fenugreek with milk and add curd and keep it in the night.Next day the fenugreek curd may be consumed. For breakfast I would suggest sabudana khichdi as it is very light and easy to digest. Upmaa is also good for diabetic patients. Avoid banana and have citrus fruits. Here is a sample diet - Diabetic Diet: Approximately: -1800 Calories. 240 gm carbohydrate 60 gm protein 60 gm fats Morning: - Tea one cup with 20 ml milk or limejuice. Break fast: - Milk one cup (170 ml). Bread one slice (25 gm). Egg one or one cup extra milk for vegetarian. Mid morning: - Any one of the sugar free fruit. Lunch: - Atta or rice; three small chapattis or cooked rice (75 gm). Dal 100 gm. Green vegetables as much as desired. Oil for cooking – three tea spoon (15 ml) Evening tea: - Tea or coffee one cup with 20 ml milk. Bread one slice or 4 salt biscuits. Dinner: - Atta or rice; three small chapattis or cooked rice (75 gm). Meat or fish or chicken 25 gm. Curd 100gm. Green vegetables as much as desired. Oil for cooking – three tea spoon (15 ml). Any one of the sugar free fruit. The other important thing is to exercise regularly and your life will become organised. Simple walking, yoga and any other suitable exercise not only helps in lowering the sugar level but also keeping the body weight down, strengthening the heart and lungs and keeping the metabolism in order. Also please visit this website where they have sample diet plans http://indianfoodfacts.blogspot.com/2006/12/indian-food-diet-for-diabetics.html Hope this will help and it is only you who can help this problem, no amount of recommendations from anyone can help if you are not honest with the food that you consume, since this disease is nutrition related.

Q: Are there any diabetic food delivery services in Australia?
a friend of mine has been diagnosed with type 2 and recently had a stroke so her eating habits aren't too good.

A: Hi Mel I am diabetic too and I find most diabetic food a bit misleading. In short I avoid most products that claim to be suitable for diabetics. The best diet is simply healthy eating. A good balance between fats, proteins and carbs. Eat fresh fruit and veg. Avoid sugary products (including fruit juices made from concentrate) and exercise as much as possible. The glycemic index of food is important, but some diabetics have such bad diet that just cutting out chocolate, biscuits and cakes is the first step. One way of getting a chocolate hit without the side effects is to try low-cal instant chocolate drinks, check the sugar content, but there are some quite good ones available. Far easier to advise than to implement. I know all this and still eat crisps and drive when I should walk. Obviously, you should really speak to a professional nutritionist, I am no expert, but I hope this helps. Good luck to your friend, I hope she gets well soon.

Q: where can I find real food diabetic recipes that a guy will eat?
My husband is picky, and all the recipes are for fru-fru food like lamb and wine sauce and stuff like that, I need REAL FOOD menus, please!!!

A: There are really great diabetic books. And since diabetic diets are very similiar to low carb or gluten free diets there are many to choose from. Try the Betty Crocker Diabetes book or the Mr. Food's Quick and Easy diabetic cooking book.

Q: Anyone have any recipes for German food that is diabetic friendly?
I am a type 2 diabetic and LOVE German food, my mom's people came from that area of the world between the World Wars, and want to keep eating it. Please help!

A: I am too, a former chef and of German heritage myself, you can eat almost everything, but smaller portions, I make struedel with apples sweetened with brown sugar "Splenda", carbohydrates are our biggest no-no, just make sure to weight things, portion half the size you would normally. For a diabetic Black Forest cake, I have used chocolate wafers, with a low fat whipped cream topping, chery pie filling and shaved dark chocolate in a free form arrangement, just look at the recipes, set it up for the family or make it and the portion it according to your diet, I see a dietitian.

Q: Which is the good food for diabetic patient?
Which is the good food for diabetic patient?

A: ALL food is good. Meat is very good. Vegetables are good. Stay AWAY from starchy vegetables, like corn. Eat only SMALL amounts of fruit. Stay AWAY from grapes & bananas. Eat only SMALL amounts of potatoes, rice, and noodles (ALL food starch will break down in your stomach and becomes 100% sugar!). When you cook noodles, UNDER cook them so they are a bit hard. Do NOT eat mashed potatoes. The longer it takes for food to break down in your stomach, the better!

Q: What kinds of food is a diabetic supposed to eat?
I have a relative that is a diabetic, she wants to know what kinds of foods she should eat? Thanks She knows that sugar free foods are ok. She has been watching and reading labels and said that there are so many foods that raise her blood sugar, that she just doesn't know what to eat. She was just diagnosed with type 2. Is there maybe a good web site that can help her?

A: limit carbohydrates- things like potatoes, pastas, breads, and corn are high in carbohydrates and send your sugar levels up.Try to stay away from sweets, eat more vegetables and salads and raw fruits. Portion control helps too.

Q: what is the best food for a diabetic dog?
My vet said diabetic dogs need a food that is low in carbs and high in fiber so which is the best brand? And how do I get my dog to drink more water without getting over heated? (she has long fur)

A: try to give him foods that dont have that much sugar and also salt in them. i am not saying cut the salt, but just make it a smaller amount.give him soooooooooooo much water or ice cubes. if he also eats like fruits give him some apple. not your computer or ipod, an eatable apple. just kidding. ok then i wish you the best of luck

Q: What is the best food that you can feed a diabetic cat/?
This cat is a spayed female, 9 yrs old, and also overweight. She is on special cat food from the vet. She was recently put on insulin 2x a day, instead of once. She is not losing any weight, even though she is restricted in her eating. She does not like the canned food that my sister got from the vet, so she is eating the dry(I think it is OD) Is there any other food recommended for a diabetic cat?

A: Hi I own and have adopted diabetic cats as well as helped many people learn how to deal with this disease. Your cat is pretty smart. OD is not for diabetic cats and the diabetic cat foods DM and MD aren't so hot either. Dry food should not be fed to any cat let alone a diabetic. Dry food is the number 1 reason cats get diabetes in the first place. The best thing you can feed is canned foods that don't have gravy. Fancy feast is a middle grade cat food and is fine for diabetics and better for diabetics then the prescription stuff. The thing is lower carbs can reduce insulin needs and with you not testing (I assume) there is no way to know the affect the food change will have on the blood glucose. Here's another thing. She should not be restricted in her eating right now. If the blood sugar gets too low, cats will eat to protect themselves sometimes so food should be available for that. Please contact me if you want to learn how to treat this disease and take control. Include type of insulin, how much you giv, when diagnosed and the name of the food you feed. I will be happy to help you. Your profile states you do not allow emails so I would need one to contact you.

Q: What's the best food to feed a diabetic cat?
We are buying prescription food, but it's so expensive on top of the insulin. It's getting hard to afford. Then I read somewhere that prescription food has loads of carbs as well (Hills Science M/D). Then I thought, why not fresh chicken/beef etc as there's no carbs and therefore no sugar? Can anyone share their diabetic cat experiences? Thanks.

A: Check with your vet for guidance on preparing food for a diabetic cat. He or she should be more than glad to assist you, and is best qualified to do so. Don't hesitate to ask if they ever get any coupons or rebate offers from the food company.
